Is it better to work within your limits, perfecting what you know, or to push your boundaries, learning all you can?

I caught myself having a fanboy moment with one of my own ideas. You see,one of the races I'm designing,the Makka, are a kind of underground furry bug creature that only come above ground in the fall and winter. They all kind of have this ugly hairy bug look, no problem right? Well as I'm designing the castes I come to the Makka Drones, sort of knight looking things that made me go 'Oh kwool' and so I started expanding on them, then came the Makka queen, and suddenly because of the drones I wanted her to be more female looking in feature rather then ugly bug thing like the rest, and here is where I stopped myself. Why aren't cartoons concidered accaptable forms of art in college level art classes! Why?! Not that I do it often, but it's fun to learn how, and yet people look at you as though you're the class retard for drawing disney inspired characters. Draw a blotch and call it art, draw a giggling mouth and it's wtf's all around. Now my teacher didn't say I couldn't, she just said I should draw something else. But I calready can do other things, which is why I'm learning this new style, I'm bored with detailed heads at the moment. All well, learning to be better at the things you're bored at can only help you be better at the things you have fun with.
